What business intelligence tools have you used?
I don't have deep BI experience, but have used and been exposed to a few business intelligence tools across product and marketing. Three of my favourite platforms I've experienced and have had exposure to are Tableau, Mode Analytics, and Grow.
What stage of company growth should you start using BI reporting tools?
I've been asked this question by a few startups over the years. I've also seen similar questions across forums quite a bit, and to be honest, I recommend engaging in BI reporting tools when you've reached product-market fit. Now product-market fit has different definitions depending on your business/startup, but if you are experiencing (or about to experience) fast growth and know you're about to receive lots of data, then that's a good time. Yes, some of these platforms are expensive but worth the ROI if implemented properly both in the short and long term. As an absolute minimum from day one is setting up a product analytics tool like Mixpanel or Amplitude (or I actually suggest both to see which one you like). Check out my recommendations for product analytics tools to consider (which some have BI/AI capabilities as well).
What are the cheapest or most cost-effective BI reporting tools?
Most do cost quite a bit, but worth it for startups that are scaling and that have reached product-market fit. If you want to measure, report and even predict (and build data models) on business analytics, product, marketing and any other large datasets, then you will need the capabilities of a business intelligence reporting tool. Two good options which are cost-effective are Analytics Canvas and Tableau.
